Some of these threats come from our federal government and President Obama. One such threat is the president’s proposed Clean Power Plan. This plan would certainly do irreparable harm to the coal industry and cost miner’s their jobs.
However, this week the United States Supreme Court halted President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency’s implementation of this plan until the legal issues surrounding it are resolved.
“Today is a big day for coal miners and their families. The Clean Power Plan, if implemented, would cost thousands of hard working men and women their jobs. We are thankful that the Supreme Court has intervened on this critical issue” said Ken Johnson, OH Director of the Ohio Valley Jobs Alliance.
Some of these threats are local, such as the proposals by some area governments to offer out-of-state corporations special tax deals to build gas power plants right in our backyards. Yes, these special deals use the tax dollars of countless coal miners and their families to build gas plants that create just a few dozen full-time jobs while potentially costing our area thousands of good-paying, full-time jobs in the coal industry.
While the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision this week was a victory for working families all across the Ohio Valley, we must not give up our fight. The president has made no secret of his anti-coal agenda and out-of-state millionaires are continuing to pressure local governments to offer them up special tax deals for their corporate interests.
